Curriculum Vitae

Basic Info

I obtained my Electronics Engineering degree from the Metropolitan Autonomous University (Mexico) in 2011. I pursued advanced studies, earning a Master's degree in Microelectronics in 2013 and a Ph.D. with distinction in Communications and Electronics in 2018 from the Polytechnic National Institute (Mexico). During my academic journey, I participated in several international research opportunities. From 2012 to 2013, I conducted research at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. Later, as part of the JUSST program, I spent a year (2015-2016) at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, Japan. In 2019-2020, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Iwate Prefectural University, Japan. I then worked as a project researcher at the University of Tokyo from 2020-2022, where I developed anomaly detection systems using deep learning techniques. Following that, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Meiji University until March 2025. Currently, I am a staff scientist at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan, continuing my research contributions in the field.

Interview

My Journey in AI Research: Living in Iwate, Japan.
I'm Andres Hernandez-Matamoros, a researcher in artificial intelligence, and I'd like to share my experiences living in Iwate, Japan. My work initially focused on AI systems that analyze human emotions, but now I develop technology to detect early signs of heart attacks.

When I first arrived in Japan, I was struck by the cultural contrasts and unique aspects of daily life. One of the most interesting comparisons I've made is between Mexico's "Day of the Dead" and Japan's Obon festival—both deeply meaningful but celebrated in different ways.

Living abroad has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for my home country. In this interview, I reflect on my journey, the challenges and rewards of working in Japan, and how these experiences have shaped me both professionally and personally.
